CRITERIA FOR PARTICIPATION IN STRESS REDUCTION PROGRAM
 

Participants In the Stress Reduction Program fall Into four general categories:

  1. Preventive: These participants are self-referred or referred by others,
  2. Psychologicai/Psychistric: The severity of the diagnosis ranges from mild to moderate, with common diagnosis being; depression, anxiety, panic disorder, or adjustment disorder.
  3. Medical Diagnosis/Stress Related Diagnosis: This category of participants includes those with psychosomatic complaints or physical illnesses exacerbated by insufficient coping skills. Including gastrointestinal problems, headaches, and hypertension.
  4. Medical Diagnosis/Acute or Chronic: This category of participants are seeking management of symptoms such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Screening involves a one hour interview and review of prospective participants intake form, which is completed just prior to the interview. The following criteria are considerations in the interview:

  1. The prospective participant is identified as having stress related symptoms, whether physical or psychological.
  2. The prospective participant may be self-referred, but a physician or therapist referral is required if the person is currently undergoing treatment for a medical or psychiatric problem.
  3. If the prospective participant is identified during the interview (or on the intake form) as abusing substances or being drug dependent he/she will be referred to more intensive programs.
  4. If the prospective participant is identified during the interview as experiencing serious psychiatric difficulties, such as major depression or severe personality disorder, he/she will be referred to a psychiatrist or psychologist for further evaluation and treatment to be reevaluated for the course after sufficient treatment is undergone.
  5. If the prospective participant is identified during the interview as experiencing medical difficulties which have not been diagnosed or treated, he/she will be referred to his/her physician for appropriate evaluation and treatment before involvement in the course is considered.
